You’re too Sweet | Part 2
Walking across the parking lot, I see Jace on my curb scrolling through his phone. I clear my throat and he looks up.
“What are you doing here, Jace?” I say a little too harshly.
He stands up, belly jiggling. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“I’m fine.”
“Oh.” Jace looks at his shoes. “Just when you got out of my truck…”
We avoid eye contact.
“You’re too sweet.” I cross my arms in front of me.
“What?” Jace looks up, offended.
“Don’t open the door for me.” I shiver. “I mean, you don’t have to do that.”
“Oh, okay.”
“You’re mean to Becky.” I rub my hands against my arms.
“Um, yeah. I can fix that.”
“You play too many video games.”
“I agree with you there.” Jace took off his jacket and put it around my shoulders.
“You need a haircut.”
“Done.” He pushes a dark brown curl out of his face.
The wind whistles through the apartment complex and I pull his jacket around me. The smooth lining warms my arms and protects me from the elements. It smells good.
