Pixie gave a long sigh as she walked up the steps to the courthouse, her pink hair blowing in the wind. She had decided to wear her short black dress, pink leggings, and a navy blazer today. The dress covered the Tinkerbell tattoo on her chest and made her plus-size frame curvier. Her giant rings clicked on the door handles of the courthouse as she swung its door wide.
Pixie dragged her feet to the fourth floor as she always did at the beginning of each month. She used to make this journey with her friend, Laquisha. Laquisha always made her laugh and kept her mind off the process. Pixie’s feet and back hurt as she lumbered up the last step.
The fourth floor was dazzling white stone and marble. The staff had filled it with fall decorations, red and orange leaves with pumpkins on the wooden benches outside judge’s offices. An older gentleman finished sweeping under the bench Pixie usually waited on; Pixie nodded to him as she sat down.
Pixie pulled her purse onto her lap and pulled out her paperwork. She slid it through her fingers a few times, then messed with the hem of her dress. Pixie’s stomach rumbled as she began to crave the diet Coke stashed in her purse. Her boyfriend, Kale, had given it to her this morning to celebrate after her hearing.
