Snap! I swear under my breath after the strap of my lifeguard suit slipped out of my hands and hit my sunburned shoulder. I let out a huff and reach for my purple t-shirt. I slip it over my short brown hair as my mom yells from the kitchen. “You’re gonna be late!”

“Mom!” I yell back. “You’ll wake up the whole house!”

I step into my black shorts and the house creaks. I jump slightly, pulling them up. One foot lands funny and I topple into the heavy wood frame of my bed. I moan, walking towards my closet. Slowly opening the top of my dresser, I pull out the first book in the series I bought yesterday. This one has a silvery cover with black lettering. I drop the book in my sling bag. The purple cloth rips.

I swear under my breath.

“Mckenzie Ann Borden!”

“Coming!” I shove the sling bag into my old black backpack, my book sticking out the top.

“Kenzie.” My sister moans from the bed a few feet from me.

She takes the pillow that lay against the green and blue mural on the wall next to her bed and tries to throw it at me, but it lands on the floor next to her bed. She moans and rolls over. I stick my tongue out at her.

She mumbles something else, but I am out the door and into the kitchen. My mom is sitting at the kitchen table drinking diet coke and flipping…
