A Chapter by Chapter Review of Girl, Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis

The subtitle of Girl, Stop Apologizing is “A Shame-Free Plan For Embracing and Achieving Your Goals,” so I approached the book as encouragement for entrepreneurs. It is for women who want to start businesses and make money. The ninth excuse Hollis tackles is the one used by women who haven’t become entrepreneurs because “good girls don’t hustle.”

“The world tells me that good girls don’t hustle.” (81) I have NEVER heard this excuse before. Women have been hustling since God made Eve. We were MADE for work. Every stay-at-home mom hustles to raise her kids; every businesswoman hustles to meet her deadlines. Our life is the hustle.

The other grievance in this chapter is Hollis’s bold statement: boxed cake mixes are for poor people. She says the occasion that changed her life was her eleventh birthday party — a celebration with no decorations, a boxed cake mix in a pyrex dish, and a tiny apartment. She reveals how she feels about money and provides a lot of evidence that she suffers from greed.
