A Chapter by Chapter Review of Girl, Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis

The subtitle of Girl, Stop Apologizing is “A Shame-Free Plan For Embracing and Achieving Your Goals,” so I approached the book as encouragement for entrepreneurs. It is for women who want to start businesses and make money. The seventh behavior Hollis suggests, is “learn to say no.”

This chapter holds some valuable advice, but Hollis returns to that dead horse: “I personally don’t believe that I need to volunteer at their school to be a good mom.” (147) It seems like she is trying to explain away her not being there for her kids, and it’s getting old.

The Good

“I’ve learned to say no without even one second of guilt or shame about it.” (148)

“Only touch something once…only touch it once in that, as soon as you get the request, you respond as soon as possible in the affirmative or the negative.” (148)

“Every time I gave someone an hour, I was taking an hour away from my kids. Every time I gave someone an hour, that was less energy I had to devote to my marriage.” (149)
