Setting:
Though not explicitly stated, all clues point toward the setting of Gilded being Germany. Rumplestiltskin is a German fairy tale, part of Brother’s Grim released in 1812. Nachtkrapp and Erlking are both parts of German folklore. I assumed we were in early 1800s Germany.
Plot:
This character-driven plot is a chess match between Serilda and the Erlking. Every action has a counteraction and that’s what drives the story forward.
The mystery and the romance kept me coming back. I don’t know much about German lore so I was interested in the other fairy tales. I wanted to know how Meyer interpreted Rumplestiltskin’s story, and which elements came into play when. The romance, which was super influential to the story, made it hard to put the book down! I was rooting for it the whole time.
Characters:
Serilda: Our main protagonist, Serilda was blessed by the trickster god. She gets herself into trouble a lot because she lies, but people also blame her for the misfortune of her town.
