3 out of 5 stars. Cytonic suffers from middle book syndrome. I think Skyward will be a quintet (five-book series) so Cytonic is the middle of the series. (Think of the second book in a trilogy; it’s usually not as good as the first.)

Setting

Again we are in a different setting than the last book. I could suspend my belief in the second book, but another new setting in the third was too jarring. I found myself not caring about this new place, the Nowhere. I wanted to get back to “earth,” because I wanted Spensa and Jorgen to be together and I wanted Spensa to help the humans, not be sent on another side quest.

That aside, the Nowhere is kind of cool. A bunch of floating islands that can be whatever Sanderson wants; makes for the ideal setting for wild adventures. The way the Nowhere is set up contributes to the plot significantly; Spensa can’t travel freely without a ship and the threat of losing who she is, increases the tension and stakes.

Plot

Like I said about the setting, Cytonic felt like a side quest except for a few parts. The “Path of the Elders” and Spensa’s check-ins…
