Be the Bridge | History Keeps Account
Book Review of Be the Bridge by Latasha Morrison | Chapter 2 History Keeps Account
Step 1: Awareness of the truth: “Truth is the foundation of awareness, and awareness is the first step in the process of reconciliation.” pg. 32
Morrison opens this chapter by telling a story about a conversation she had with white strangers at a church event. The individuals wanted to talk about race and politics. Not taking part in the conversation myself, it’s hard to tell the mood, tone, or intentions of all the people involved, but from Morrison’s testimony, it seems like the participants were talking past each other.
Strangers don’t change minds.
Do you know of any street preachers who have converted strangers? Me neither. I would rather have a beer, share a meal, or play cornhole with someone and talk with them about life than shout at them as they walk by. In most instances, people aren’t converted overnight or with one conversation. We don’t trust strangers and we don’t change because of one conversation.
Disconnection seems to be a common theme of this chapter. Morrison’s ideas and advice are disconnected from the Gospel, from the Bible, and from the truth. As we will see, Morrison takes the Bible out of context and misinterprets the Gospel.
